SURAT: A computer engineering student was sentenced to 10 years rigourous imprisonment after he was convicted of raping a minor girl in Pandesara in 2013 on Wednesday.
Convict Sony alias Vikas Shah, a native of Uttar Pradesh, had raped the girl, who was seven years then and lived in his neighbourhood. He was 23 then. In April 2013, the girl and her brother had gone to his house to play. Shah gave her brother Rs 5 and asked him to leave. He then sexually assaulted the girl. Shah was living with his relatives in Pandesara and studying in a private engineering college.
On returning home, the girl narrated the incident to her mother. She and other relatives thrashed Shah and her father registered a complaint with the Pandesara police on April 14, 2013.
Government pleader Digant Tevar told TOI that the seven-year-old girl had identified the accused in court and fearlessly narrated the entire incident. Joint district judge R L Thakkar convicted Shah for rape under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO). Under POCSO sections, he with slapped seven years imprisonment and Rs 2,000 fine and under Sections 5(M) 6, he was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment and Rs 3,000 fine . He was also fined Rs 50,000 as interim payment for victim compensation scheme. All the sentences will run concurrently.
