SURAT: There is a heavy rush for membership of swimming pools because summer vacation has started in many schools in the city. More than 20,000 people have sought membership in 16 swimming pools run by Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC). It had earned an income of Rs2crore from swimming pool membership last year.
Rajesh Jariwala, in-charge of swimming pools in SMC, said, “There is huge rush for membership of swimming pools of three and six months’s duration. We run additional batches for learners too. We run four new batches in morning hours and two in evening hours during summer.” SMC takes approximately 150 members per batch for a fee of Rs400 for a three-month term. The demand is high in Adajan, Pal, Varachha, Kapodra and Althan because SMC has built elevated swimming pools here.
“I preferred to put my both sons in a swimming pool during vacation. This is better than doing nothing in vacation,” said Kaushaliya Panseria, a Kapodra resident. Her sons are class VII and Class IX students and have enrolled in learner’s batch at the swimming pool in Kapodra.
People complain of heavy rush during this time of the year in SMC-run swimming pools. “There is no space to swim in the pools. We can just stand in the water and have some fun,” a swimmer said.
