Surat: The police nabbed three persons from an industrial area in Khatodara while they were releasing untreated chemical waste into a rivulet from a tanker on Tuesday. The chemical waste was allegedly brought from an industrial unit in Ankleshwar.
A team of special operations group (SOG) and prevention of crime branch (PCB) arrested Ajay Kamal Singh, a resident of Bharuch; Pujnik Ishwar Patel, a resident of Ankleshwar and Raju Jashraj Khatiq, a resident of Pandesara area in the city when they were releasing the toxic chemical from a tanker into the rivulet behind a LPC cylinder warehouse in Dharam Nagar Industrial society in Khatodara.
Police seized the tanker worth Rs 5 lakh and 16,000 litre of chemical waste stored in it. An offence was registered at Khatodara police station and further investigation initiated. The offence was registered under various Sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 336 (endangering life and personal safety of others), 284 (negligent conduct with respect to poisonous substance), 269/270 (does any act that can spread infection of any disease dangerous to life), 277 (fouling water of public spring or reservoir) and 278 (making atmosphere noxious to health) and Environment Protection Act.
“We raided the location on receiving a tip-off. The accused were releasing an acidic liquid chemical into the rivulet. They told us that they had come here for the first time and had brought the chemical from a chemical unit in Panoli GIDC of Ankleshwar,” police inspector, PCB, R R Chaudhary said.
