Surat: Body of a 50-year-old missing jeweller was found on the bank of Tapi River at Lanka Vijay Hanuman temple in Katargam on Monday. Manish Choksi, a resident of Karwa Road in Navapura, was missing since May 15 and he may have committed as he had piled Rs 1 crore debt, police said.
Though the body was partially decomposed, police identified the victim with some documents found in his clothes.
Choksi had left the house on May 15 informing the family members that he is under heavy debt and may not return soon. Initially, they thought that he will return, but when he did not come back for a couple of days, the family approached the Mahidharpura police station.
After the missing persons’ complaint was filed, police began searching for him. Call detail records showed his last location near Magdalla bridge. Suspecting suicide, police took the help of fire department team to trace Choksi’s body. However, nothing was found.
“Initially, we suspected that Choksi jumped into Tapi River from Magdalla Bridge, but now it seems that he plunged from Amroli bridge. We are investigating if he was under some pressure to repay the money. So far, we have not come across any such fact and family members have also not alleged anything,” said police. Choksi had a jewellery business in Mahidharpura and is believed to have suffered loss in some financial transactions. Police are yet to find out exactly how Choksi piled up such a huge debt.
