Police also recovered Rs 2.36 lakh worth stolen material and cash from the accused, who were identified as Himmat Virbhan Saud, resident of Green Residency in Adajan, and Lal Bahadur alias Komal Saud (19) from Saruvan society, in Adajan.
Both accused are from Nepal and had carried out the theft with the help of others from their native.
Police investigation revealed that two other persons from Nepal — Dipak and Harish — were also involved in the theft.
The accused stole cash and valuables worth over Rs 40 lakh from residence of Manoj Sharma at Jivan Vihar Society on May 25. The house was locked as Sharma’s family was in Mumbai.
During questioning, the police found that Himmat, watchman at a residential complex, had gone to Nepal recently, where he met Dipak and Harish.
They told Himmat that they were ready to carry out theft in Surat if they receive specific tip about any locked house during vacation. On returning to the city, Himmat informed Lal Bahadur, who worked as a cook at a Chinese food eatery, about the offer.
Lal Bahadur, who had recently started washing Sharma’s car, told Himmat about his house being locked. Himmat then finalized theft plan and called Harish and Dipak. Both Harish and Dipak arrived in the city a day before the theft and returned within hours after stealing the valuables.
Police are now in search of other two accused who are believed to have crossed the border and returned to their village in Nepal.
