Weather suddenly changed at around 3:30pm and it began raining in Liliya. The rains advanced to Savarkundla, Vanda, Mekda, Dhari, Kukavav and Amreli town. The rains were accompanied by strong winds for nearly two hours.
Rive Navli passing through Savarkundla, which is usually a dry bed used by small-time vendors, saw sudden gush of water. A van also got stuck in the water that filled the riverbed with in few minutes.
Sources said that nearly 100 trees were uprooted due to the gale in the district. Parts of Gariyadhar in Bhavnagar district also reported pre-monsoon showers.
“It felt like a mini cyclone. The winds were so strong that we had to run and take shelter inside our garage,” said Sanjay Patel, who runs a car service centre in Savarkundla.
Pre-monsoon showers were also reported in several parts of forest district Dang in south Gujarat. Gujarat's only hill station Saputara too received showers.
The tribal hinterland in Dangs witnessed unexpected pre-monsoon showers on Saturday afternoon. The sky remained partially cloudy all the day which turned into pre-monsoon rain in the late afternoon.
Though the shower lasted only for few minutes, but it brought respite to the people in the tribal dwellers from humid and scorching heat on Saturday.
The pre-monsoon showers were witnessed in most of the areas in the Dang, including its headquarters Ahwa, Gujarat’s only hill station in Saputara.
As per India Meteorological Department (IMD), Sunday might also see light rain/thundershowers at isolated places in the districts of South Gujarat, Saurashtra and in Diu, Daman, Dadra Nagar Haveli. Dry weather very likely in all districts of North Gujarat region and in Kutch, it said.
According to IMD, the southwesterly winds were prevailing at lower levels over the region. The pre-monsoon showers however would disappear from Monday as IMD predicts two dry days on June 4 and June 5 before light showers return in areas of south Gujarat and Union Territories. North and central parts of the state will have to wait for the much-awaited showers.
On Saturday, Surendranagar remained the hottest city with 43 degrees Celsius followed by Gandhinagar (42 degrees) and Ahmedabad (41.9 degrees). Saurashtra-Kutch region reported overall dip in highest temperatures.
