SURAT: Surat will aim to set a new record on Sunday with participation of over 1.5 lakh runners during the Surat Night Marathon.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the marathon on Sunday. Officials of Surat Nagrik Samiti, the organizers for the event, said they have received 1.28 lakh registrations. However, only 400 entries are for full marathon. About 8,000 have registered for half marathon and 10-km run. It is expected that with number of groups joining the run, the figure may cross 1.5 lakh.

The marathon will start from Lalbhai Contractor stadium and go towards Dumas road, ONGC bridge, V R Mall to Kargil Chowk, Piplod, SVNIT Circle, Parle Point to Athwagate and return up to Rahul Raj Mall and then move to Udhna Magdalla Road.

There are 28,000 lights, 13 different pavilions on traffic circles with different themes.
Plantations and trees are coloured with natural colours and 18 live bands will performing at different spots. About 2,500 volunteers with messages on ‘Clean India’ and ‘Clean City’ will stand along the roads. The whole of Parle Point bridge is decorated with theme of Happy India.
“The main attraction of the event is a digital wall set up near Rahul Raj Mall at the cost of Rs 16 lakh where nearly 40,000 people are likely to write their messages,” MLA from Majura seat Harsh Sanghvi said. He is also one of the organizers.
“The total cost for the event is Rs 7 crore, which is borne by Surat Nagrik Samiti and it is also people’s money that we have collected through donations. We would be making all payments from that and not a single rupee is taken from local body or any other government body,” Sanghvi added.
