Close to 607 drunkards, mostly those returning from Daman, landed in police stations as cops launched a massive crackdown to curb accidents caused by drunken driving. Of these, 123 were arrested for drunken driving.
Majority of those arrested were residents of Surat, who were returning from their favourite watering hole after partying on New Year. This was the highest number of people arrested in Valsad for consuming liquor and drunken driving on a single day. "The prize of Rs 100 per arrest of drunken driving worked as a motivation and we are going to continue this incentive," said GS Malik, Surat range IG.
Valsad SP Sunil Joshi said that of the 607, 265 people were nabbed near the entry points into Gujarat from Daman. In fact, police had to hire buses to take the arrested persons to the courts after 133 cars were seized.
