H L Parekh, who is posted as an RTO inspector in Valsad, began his hunger strike under a tent erected at the RTO office campus. Parekh sat on the fast in his uniform with a banner in Gujarati behind him that read 'Indefinite fast against injustice in promotion and salary of RTO inspector H L Parekh.
"I am on fast from today and will not end it till my demands are accepted. I was denied promotion despite having required qualification and now have just four months to my retirement," said Parekh. He claims that over Rs9 lakh salary for one-and-half years of service was due to him.
"I had submitted my letter to the concerned government officers in Valsad and hence can register my protest without any fear. I had also informed police about my fast. The authorities are conducting my regular medical check-up," Parekh said.
He told TOI, "I was not allowed to join duty for over one-and-half years since 2016 but after I issued a threat that I will go on fast, I was taken back on duty only a few months ago. I had been coming to office regularly during these 18 months for which I was not paid salary amounting to Rs9 lakh."
