Forest officer caught taking bribe

Surat: A range forest officer was caught by anti-corruption bureau (ACB) sleuths in Songadh of Tapi district on Saturday while accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 from a contractor. The accused had demanded 40 per cent as bribe of a construction project's total bill from the contractor. Normally, officials demand about 8 per cent bribe, but 40 per cent was too much for anyone who heard about it in government departments.

The ACB sleuths of Tapi district nabbed Jitu Gohil, RFO in Songadh range, while accepting bribe of Rs 50,000 from civil contractor, who is complainant in the case. The accused was in-charge of a construction project of Rs 6.80 lakh. The accused had told the complainant that he will take 40 per cent of the total project cost in bribe. He had instructed the complainant to pay the money once his bill is cleared.

The complainant had recently received payment and the accused had started to demand Rs 2.72 lakh as his share. The complainant told him that he was not in a position to pay this much of money, but the accused kept up the pressure. The complainant then approached the ACB and lodged a complaint against the RFO.

The ACB sleuths laid a trap when the complainant went to pay Rs 50,000 as first instalment of the bribe amount and nabbed the accused, sources said.
