SMC to hire waste collection agency

Surat: The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has decided to begin the textile waste collection in the city through an outsourced agency.

The process would begin from Udhna zone that has large number of textile industrial units. However, major industrial associations have opposed this last-minute push by the SMC ruling body and have said they are not going to shell out money to any agency picked up by the municipal corporation.

In its final standing committee meeting before the Diwali festival and election code of conduct is imposed, it was decided to hand over waste collection from the city to Mahavir Eco Agency for a period of 15 years. The agency won't collect any money from shops but will collect Rs 500 per weaving unit, Rs 5,000 per dyeing and printing unit and Rs 1,000 from chemical and industrial unit per month. They will collect the waste, treat it and make steam from certain type of waste that would be resupplied to the industries.

Rajesh Desai, chairman of standing committee, "The systematic waste collection will solve issues of gutter choking up and reduce, pressure on solid land fill site. SMC would also be able to reduce its transport expenses."

However, an industrialist on the condition of anonymity said, "We pay good amount of industrial tax to SMC. We are not going to comply with this contractor of SMC at all .We don't need it."

Another industrialist added that the agency has been given a backdoor entry after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) rapped up SMC to find alternate and scientific ways of solid waste disposal to reduce pressure on landfill site and to avoid its ultimately closure.
