With residents on Diwali vacation, roads, malls wear deserted look

Surat: The Diamond City is wearing a deserted look in view of Diwali and New Year festivities when people visit their hometowns or go on excursions during the long vacation. For residents, who have chosen to stay back during the Diwali vacation, it's time to enjoy rides on open roads, without the fear of experiencing traffic snarls.

TOI took stock of the situation at some of the highly congested stretches in the city. The traffic flow on Sardar Bridge connecting Adajan and Athwalines, which remains chock-a-block during peak hours on any given day, was smooth. Many cars were able to overtake each other, which is not possible otherwise. The Rajmarg from Chowk Bazaar to railway station, which was teeming with tens of thousands of vehicles and pedestrians until last week, was almost deserted, with few vehicles on the road. Almost half of the shops on both sides of the roads were shut.

The Ring Road area, which houses country's largest textile wholesale markets, too was deserted. It is difficult to travel on Ring Road throughout the day. As textile markets are closed for Diwali vacation, commuters can drive their vehicles at top speed. Some areas in the city like Athwalines, Adajan, Ring Road, Chowk Bazaar, railway station, Udhana, etc, which remain jam-packed during peak hours had few commuters.

As Diwali, New Year and Bhai Duj festivals fell on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the residents had got an entire week to celebrate with their family and friends. The scene in the city is likely to remain the same for another week.

A traffic cop at Athwa Gate junction said, "It is quite relaxing for us. There is no need to manage traffic during peak hours as the flow is quite smooth."
