Surat: Several lakh people from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, who are settled in the Diamond City, will offer prayers to Sun during the Chhath Puja to thank it for bestowing the bounties of life on earth along Tapi riverbank in the city here on Thursday and Friday.
The local authorities have made elaborate arrangements for Chhath Puja with the main venue being ISKCON Ghat at Jahangirpura. Surat Municipal Corporation has built a number of raised platforms at different ghats for the occasion. Bihar Vikas Parishad volunteers not only cleaned the ghats but also built platforms with the help of NGOs for Chhath Puja, including at Navdi Ovara and Dindoli lake.
"Several thousands devotees would gather at different ghats in Surat to offer prayers to Sun God," Bihar Vikas Parishad volunteer KK Sharma said.
The devotees fast on the next day of Chhath Puja and eat only kheer in the evening as prasad as a part of rigorous rituals of the festival. One day before is 'nahya-bahya' which means people need to clean themselves up and give up on eating onions, garlic etc and sleep on ground.
