Rahul to attend farmers’ ‘chaupal’ in Dharampur

Surat: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi will be holding a 'chaupal' with farmers of south Gujarat and other parts of the state at Saurashtra Patidar hall at Dharampur in Valsad district on November 3.

The 'chaupal' will be held under the aegis of Gujarat Khedut Samaj (GKS). Farmers from all over the state will arrive at the venue where discussions will be held on 34 points concerning them.

GKS president Jayesh Patel told TOI, "Rahul Gandhi contacted us for arranging a meeting with the farmers in south Gujarat. Since GKS is a non-political organization, we told him that the programme can be held under our banner, to which he agreed. Over 1,000 farmers from different parts of the state will arrive for the meeting at Dharampur."

Patel stated that major issues concerning the farmers in Gujarat are that of land reservation and policies of the state government to harass the farmers' community. The biggest issue troubling the farmers is that of Special Investment Region (SIR) where the government takes 50 per cent of land of farmers without paying compensation.

Other issues that would be discussed will be Urban Development Act, haphazard town planning in rural areas, proposal for privatization of irrigation under the new irrigation act 2013, 24-hour electricity in fields, GST on tractor, agricultural equipment and fertilizer.

"The biggest issue being faced by sugar cooperatives is that of income tax notices. The cooperatives have been asked to pay Rs 3,200 crore outstanding income tax," Patel said.
