SURAT: Powerloom weavers have threatened to shut down their units and handover the keys to Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) if it went ahead with its textile waste collection project.
Pandesara Weavers Cooperative Society (PWCS) stated that the standing committee of the SMC has approved the project for Sachin-based private company. It has been imposed as a rule that the company will collect Rs500 on monthly basis from weaving units and Rs5,000 from textile processing units for lifting and processing textile waste, including yarn and 'chindhi' .
"From years, we are giving away the yarn waste to the NGOs. Recently, a few yarn waste recycling plants were made operational and they are paying us money for the yarn waste. We are already disposing of the waste in an environment-friendly manner, there is no reason to hire a private company," PWCS president Ashish Gujarati said.
Gujarati added, "If the civic body approves the project, then we will shut our units and handover the keys to the civic authorities. Have you ever heard of anyone paying for the waste in your house to scrap dealer?"
Federation of Gujarat Weavers Association president Ashok Jirawala said, "The elections are round the corner and the ruling BJP leaders are leaving no stone unturned to raise money. This is the reason they have given the contract to a private company. We will not tolerate this injustice to the textile sector."
After textile processors, powerloom weavers have raised a banner of revolt against the civic body for taking the powerloom sector for a ride, despite the fact that the disposal of the waste yarn material is done through non-government organizations (NGOs) and yarn waste recycle industry.
