Surat: A decomposed and partially-burnt body of a 25-year-old woman was found in a travelling bag thrown into a gutter opposite a lake at Dantej village of Navsari district on Friday evening. The travelling bag was dumped at the spot 15 days ago, but was torched on Wednesday by someone, the police said.
Locals alerted the police about the bag after pungent odour started to come out of it. Police found a decomposed body of a woman stuffed into the bag and also recovered some jewellery and a black cloth believed to be a portion of a burqa. A murder case was registered at Vejalpore police station and investigations begun.
"From the burqa, jewellery and other information collected from the bag, the body looks like that of a Muslim woman," the police said. "Some locals had noticed an unidentified person throwing the bag at the spot 15 days ago. The bag started to swell around three days ago, locals claimed. Meanwhile, an unidentified person torched it on Wednesday," superintendent of police, Navsari, Girish Pandya said.
Police are trying to establish the identity of the woman by questioning nearby residents. They are also checking up with police stations to find out if report of any missing woman has been registered anywhere.
"Local crime branch has been roped in to ascertain the identity of the woman. We have formed two teams of local police and crime branch to investigate the case," Pandya said.
