SURAT: The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has decided to import a turntable ladder at a cost of Rs7.5 crore for its Fire Brigade to launch rescue operations for people trapped in skyscrapers during all and any kind of emergency. The 54-metre-high turntable ladder will be imported from Germany. The firm has promised to deliver it to SMC by September next year.
Chief fire officer S K Acharya told TOI, "It is a hydraulic platform which is foldable and operates quickly. The turntable ladder will reach any floor of a skyscraper fast to get fitted to an open space for fire officers to carry out fire-fighting job. It is very helpful so as to ensure fast escape of people trapped in multi-story structure which is on fire."
"If there is major fire emergency and more than 10 people are trapped in a building which is 55-metre high, then the ladder can be very useful to bring them safely in two trips. It has weight capacity of 275kg. The Fire Brigade requires the ladder because soon 70-metre high skyscrapers will be coming up in the periphery of the city," a Fire Brigade officer said.
