Cops relied on human intel to rescue minor

SURAT: The traditional method of human intelligence helped police in tracing the four-year-old child who was kidnapped by a labourer from the city on October 17. Police traced the child in Khandwa district in Madhya Pradesh but since the kidnapper had turned off his mobile phone, they had to fall back on traditional method of investigation. City police camped in the villages of Madhya Pradesh for 10 days and questioned hundreds of people there which helped them rescue the child from Khandwa on Saturday.

City police rescued Pawan Pande, a resident of Udhna Magdalla Road, from the clutches of Mukesh alias Musa Mansingh Chauhan, a resident of the slums in the Khatodara police station limits, from a farm at Kehlari village in Khandwa and arrested the accused. Chauhan is a native of Pattharwada village in Khargone district of Madhya Pradesh.

Police received information that Chauhan had gone to Khandwa with the child. His location was traced from the mobile phone that he had stolen from Bharat, the child's father.

"We initially tracked the location of the accused through mobile phone surveillance but he turned off the phone after sometime. Police only knew the last location of the accused which was Khandwa. We tried to trace all individuals with Mukesh Chauhan's name in the area after gathering data from the electoral rolls," said H R Brahmbhatt, police inspector, Khatodara police station.

"Since the accused was from another district, it was difficult to trace him at Khandwa. But our search in over 10 villages for 10 days with the help of Khandwa police helped us create an awareness in the villages and ultimately reach him," the police said. Villagers from Kehlari alerted MP cops about having seen a man with a child at a farm.
