SURAT: Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat, Congress leader Ahmed Patel, has written to Union home minister Rajnath Singh alleging that the ruling BJP in Gujarat is vitiating a serious investigation into the allegation that he allegedly had links with two ISIS operatives nabbed recently.
"The matter of national security cannot be a prisoner of politics and neither should it be reduced baselessly to maligning political opponents for petty electoral gains. This would be the greatest injustice we would be doing in our fight against terrorism. Therefore I find it extremely disturbing that the ruling party in Gujarat is vitiating a serious ongoing investigation just ahead of elections by making wild and unsubstantiated allegations," says the letter undersigned by Patel.
"We should rise above political differences in matters which involve national security. Framing terror charges must be done by law enforcement agencies and the judiciary and not by political leaders in press conferences from party headquarters," the letter further says.
Extending "unstinted support" to the government, Patel writes: "Those guilty, irrespective of faith or any affiliation, must be brought to justice."
In an another letter written to Rajya Sabha chairperson Venkaiah Naidu, Patel said, "We wish to bring to your notice that the recent reports of arrest of ISIS operatives in South Gujarat by the ATS and subsequent attempts by the ministers of the Union government and the Chief Minister of Gujarat to link members of this esteemed house to the alleged terror activities. Such attempts by the functionaries of the elected governments to malign the prestige of a senior colleague through press statements is highly reprehensible and condemnable."
Patel's reaction came in the wake of Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani's allegation that one of the two ISIS suspects, Kasim Stimberwala, had served at a hospital of which the Congress leader was a trustee. The hospital authorities, however, have denied the allegation stating that Patel had resigned from the hospital in 2014.
"Anything that disturbs law and order eventually harms the mercantile ethos of Gujarat," Patel's letter reads.
