DRI seizes Chinese crackers worth Rs 72 lakh

Surat: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized a container carrying banned Chinese crackers, imported illegally by a Surat-based firm. This is the second seizure of the banned crackers of the same firm in the last one month.

Official sources said that the DRI sleuths seized the container from the Nhava Sheva port in Mumbai on Thursday following information regarding the same. Around 349 cartons of Chinese firecrackers valued at Rs 71.69 lakh were seized.

Last month, the DRI had caught 411 cartoons of Chinese firecrackers valued at Rs 1 crore, which was imported by the Surat-based Salasar Tools, engaged in the trading of imported goods.

DRI official based on the intelligence input identified and examined the container at Nhava Seva.

The import of firecrackers is restricted and requires license from petroleum and explosive safety organization (PESO) and Ms Salasar Tools is not possessing the licence for the import of firecrackers from China.

The importer in his statement recorded under customs act 1962 accepted his offense of smuggling the Chinese crackers.

The owner of the firm, who was arrested by the DRI under the provisions of the customs act 1962 and produced in the chief judicial magistrate court in September, is in the judicial custody.
