Surat: A sudden downpour coupled with heavy winds pounded the Diamond City, uprooting more than 30 trees in different areas on Saturday evening.
Fire and emergency department sources stated that the control room was flooded with calls from different areas across the city about the uprooting of trees due to heavy rains and winds. Around three trees got uprooted at the BRTS route on VIP road, a tree uprooted near Anjan Shalakha in Athwalines etc.
They said fire fighters and tree cutters were rushed to the spot to clear the locations. In a few incidents, some cars and two-wheelers parked under the trees were damaged. However, there was no untoward incident.
Residents in the city were experiencing a severely humid atmosphere for the last three days with temperatures soaring to 38 degrees Celsius. On Saturday afternoon, there was a sudden change in the weather condition with heavy downpour coupled with gusty winds at about 5 pm. The rains pounded the city for almost 15 minutes, throwing normal life out of gear.
Low-lying areas of Pratap Press Gali at Chowk Bazaar, Hodi Bungalow and Ved Road witnessed waterlogging. The disaster control department is yet to gauge the exact amount of rainfall received in the city.
The fire and emergency department of Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) received around 17 calls. Majority of the incidents of tree uprooting were registered from Udhna Magdalla, City Light and Piplod areas.
