Heavy rains with winds pound Surat, trees uprooted

SURAT : A sudden downpour coupled with heavy winds pounded the diamond city, uprooting many trees and even advertisement hoardings on the buildings and at the open plots on Saturday evening.

Residents in the diamond city were experiencing a severely humid atmosphere from the last three days with the temperatures soaring to 38 degrees centigrade.

On Saturday afternoon, there was a sudden change in the weather condition with the heavy downpour coupled with gusty winds at about 5:00 pm. The rains pounded the city for almost 15 minutes throwing the normal life out of gear.

The low lying areas including Pratap Press Gali at Chowk Bazaar, Hodi Bungalow, Ved Road etc. witness water logging due to the heavy rains.

Sources in the fire and emergency department stated that the control room was flooded with calls from different areas across the city about the uprooting of the trees due to heavy rains and gusty winds. Around three trees got uprooted at the BRTS route at VIP road, a tree uprooted near Anjan Shalakha in Athwalines etc.

However, the disaster control department in the city could not gauge the exact amount of rainfall.
