Surat: Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC)'s standing committee approved project proposals worth Rs400 crore at one go here on Saturday.
The standing committee also approved the Koyli and Varachha Khadi remodelling work and the laying of vehicle tracks there. These proposals were made a part of agenda on the insistence of mayor Asmita Shiroya who represents Varachha ward.
"It was initially decided to take up this Rs170 crore work on receiving grant from the state government. However, upcoming assembly elections and ruling BJP's shaky situation in Patidar-dominated Varachha made the mayor to insist on it," the SMC sources said.
The other proposals approved were model roads in the seven municipal zones of the city at a cost of Rs28 crore, development of Dumas beach and setting up of an eco-tourism park at Dumas. The SMC has sought 10,20,000 square metre of land from the forest department for its eco-tourism park.
The standing committee may meet one more time next week before the announcement of the assembly elections to gift some bonanza to the citizens.
It is for the first time this year that proposals worth Rs400 crore were approved within two hours by the BJP-ruled civic body. The project proposals include Rs132 crore multilayer flyover at Sahara Darwaja and Rs170 crore vehicle track on both sides of Varachha Koyli Khadi.
Standing committee chairman Rajesh Desai told TOI: "The lowest bidder for multilayer flyover project had reduced the cost by just Rs1 crore from the originally quoted value of Rs133 crore. A three-member technical committee of the civic body said the costing was justified as the construction work was complex and in congested market area. The contractor will have to work only during night hours."
