SURAT: Surat district collector Mahendra Patel courted controversy after he posted a joke scoffing at Congress for opposing the bullet train in a WhatsApp group. Though Patel clarified that the joke was sent mistakenly in the group, the local Congress unit has taken serious objection to the content which ridicules former PM Rajiv Gandhi. Sarcastic parallels are drawn between Congress' opposition to the bullet train funded by Japan and Rajiv Gandhi's marriage with 'foreigner' Sonia Gandhi.
"A message that was to be sent to my operator was sent mistakenly to another group by me," Patel told TOI, adding that he and the city police commissioner are supposed to keep a tab on the comments made in the social media.
Besides the bullet train joke, there were two other messages posted by the collector -one in which former chief minister Anandiben Patel's power was compared to Sardar Patel and another about Hindu terrorism.
Not taking it kindly, the local Congress unit has threatened to gherao the collector at 12 noon on Thursday . Aslam Cyclewala, Congress councilor, said, "We have given a memorandum to the police commissioner asking for appropriate action under Information Technology Act. We feel the comment against former PM is in a poor taste."
Satish Sharma, police commissioner, told the Congress leaders that the collector's intention was not to hurt anyone and the message was sent by mistake.
