Five arrested for destroying Padmavati rangoli in Surat

SURAT: Police arrested five men in Umra police station on Thursday for allegedly destroying the rangoli at a city mall on Sunday. The accused were booked for rioting and unlawful assembly on Wednesday night.

Police booked Shailendra Rajput and Shanbhu Singh along with 10 others in Umra police station after the issue came to light through various sections of media. Police are yet to arrest the other accused involved in the incident. The incident came under focus after Deepika Padukone expressed anger over the incident on her official twitter handle. The complaint was lodged by a security person of Rahul Raj Mall.

"We have arrested five men part of the group. We will arrest others who were part of the unlawful assembly," said police.

On Sunday, two of the accused first came to the mall where the Ayurveda medical student and artist Karan Jariwala was making the 8 ft tall and wide rangoli of Deepika Pandukone's looks as Padmavati in latest Bollywood movie. They inquired to Jariwala that who give him permission to make the rangoli.

The group destroyed the rangoli, which was 50 percent complete after 48 hour work by Jariwala, on Sunday night to register their protest against the movie. Jariwala tweeted two photos of the incomplete rangoli and after it was destroyed. Both the photos were shared by Padukone in her four tweets on Wednesday in which she also urged Smriti Irani, union minister for textile, information and broadcasting to look into this matter.
