SURAT: Jain monk Acharya Shantisagar Maharaj (45), who is accused of raping a 19-year-old college student, was brought to New Civil Hospital (NCH) by the police for potency test and to collect samples for DNA profiling. Police had collected samples of the girl on Tuesday for DNA profiling.
It took over six hours for the procedures to complete and police teams had to camp at the hospital till evening. Shantisagar was brought to the hospital from Lajpore Central Jail at around 10.30 am and the procedure continued till 4.30 pm on Wednesday. Shantisagar allegedly raped the girl student on October 1 after calling her to take blessings at an upashray in Nanpura. The survivor lodged the complaint with Athwalines police station on October 13 against Shantisagar, a resident of Mahavir Digambar Jain Temple in Nanpura. The rape survivor's parents and brother were in the same building, but in another room, few metres away from the room where she was allegedly raped.
After the girl lodged complaint against the monk, some leaders of the Jain community came forward in support of Shantisagar and alleged that the monk was being framed to extort money by the survivor's parents.
