20 millionaires in fray in Diamond City

SURAT: With the Election Commission increasing election spending limit of the candidates to Rs 28 lakh, both the Congress and BJP have fielded millionaire candidates in the Diamond City.

Out of 24 candidates contesting on 12 seats in city, nearly 20 are millionaires with income and assets ranging between Rs 1 crore to Rs 55 crore. Probably, the richest among all the candidates in city is Kanti Ballar, a realtor and BJP candidate from Surat (north) constituency who declared total assets of over Rs 55 crore.

Choriyasi BJP candidate and sitting MLA, Jankhana Patel's property has increased manifolds from Rs 7.2 crore in 2016 to Rs 12.78 crore. Jankhana had contested bye-election in 2016 after the demise of her father and then the sitting MLA, Raja Patel.

There are 16 new faces from Congress and BJP, who are contesting the assembly election for the first time. Of these, 10 are from Congress, while BJP has fielded six.


While all six new faces of BJP are millionaires, Jignesh Mevasa, a Congress candidate from Katargam seat is the poorest among all the candidates with total assets valued at Rs 9.30 lakh, followed by Iqbal Patel of Congress contesting from Surat (west) seat who declared assets of Rs 12.42 lakh.

The richest candidate fielded by the Congress is Yogendrasinh Bakrola from Olpaad constituency with total assets worth Rs 21.21 crore.

In 2012 assembly election, individual affidavits revealed that the Congress candidates were richer than their rivals from BJP. Kashiram Rana's son Deepak, who was the GPP candidate from Surat (east), had declared assets worth Rs 12.5 crore. He was contesting against sitting BJP MLA Ranjeet Gilitwala (Rs 3.7 cr) and Cong candidate Kadir Pirzada (Rs 5.76 cr)

Bhagirath Pithavdiwala, the Congress candidate from Kamrej, was the richest candidate in the district with assets worth Rs 20 crore. Pithavdiwala, a real-estate developer was pitted against advertising and publicity businessman Praful Panseria of the BJP, who declared assets worth Rs 12.87 crore.
