Notorious gangster Anil Kathi escapes from court

SURAT: A history-sheeter accused in an assault case managed to escaped from Surat district and session court premises in Athwalines on Tuesday. The accused Anil Kathi was asked to sit in the court but he managed to give cops a slip.

Kathi alias Arvind Khumji Meghji Rana alias Ranwa was booked in Umra police station under Indian Penal Code section 224 (resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension).

The accused had remained present in the court through a lawyer following a non-bailable warrant issued against him in a case of assault case registered in Sachin police station.

At around 11am Kathi was asked to sit in the court. He was taken into judicial custody as there was no one present in the court, the police compliant stated. Kathi sat for a while and later disappeared without informing the court officials.

"We are checking at his residence and other possible hideouts," said police.


Kathi, who has his own gang, has history of involvement in violent crimes in city and Rajkot. He was arrested in October 2016 by detection of crime branch and was wanted in nine cases of attempt to murder, extortion, rioting, arms act and prohibition.

His criminal history dates back to 2008 when in a land deal case he along with his associate Munna Bharwad allegedly stabbed Manish Sindhiya a gang leader. In 2010, he along with Vela Bharwad and others was involved in a controversial land deal behind TGB Hotel and had occupied the plot there illegally.

In this case too, an offence was registered against Kathi. He was involved in prohibition and loot cases in Chowk Bazaar police station area in the same year. Later he was held for possession of a pistol and live cartridges from Majura Gate area in 2010. He was sent to jail under PASA in 2010, but came out after six months.

Kathi was again arrested twice in 2012 while ferrying huge quantities of liquor. He was held again in 2014 for beating up some people over a land dispute in Sachin-Palsana Road in Gangadhara. The gangster was arrested under Arms Act in Rajkot after he attacked some people over a financial dispute in 2015.
