Education remains last priority for candidate selection

SURAT: While the Diamond City has a literacy rate of over 70%, when it comes to the candidates in fray for the assembly seats, majority of them — be it ruling BJP or opposition Congress — have not even completed basic higher education.

Except for three lawyers, a doctor and a civil engineer, around 14 candidates from BJP and Congress have not even completed higher secondary. Majority of these candidates are those who have studied up to class 3 or class 9. However, the party leaders on both sides believe that more than education, they look at the candidate's capacity to win the election before giving them the mandates.

Take an example of BJP candidate from Surat (north) Kanti Ballar, who replaced an MBA Ajay Choksi, is class III pass. His competitor Dinesh Kachhadiya of Congress has only completed HSC.

The candidates for BJP and Congress in Majura constituency, considered one of the posh areas, have not even reached secondary level of schooling. BJP's sitting MLA Harsh Sanghavi has studied till class IX and his competitor Ashok Kothari is HSC pass.

Despite his primary level education, Sanghavi is one of the most active candidate on the social media sites, including Twitter, Whatsapp and Facebook.

The most educated of all the candidates fielded by the two major parties is BJP candidate from Udhna seat Vivek Patel. Patel, who is the chairman of Gujarat Housing Board (GHB), is a civil engineer. His opponent Satish Patel of Congress is just class X pass.

In Surat west, BJP candidate Purnesh Modi is an advocate by profession, while his competitor Iqbal Patel is just class V pass.

Congress candidate of Karanj Bhavesh Rabari is MCom LLM, whereas his opponent Pravin Ghoghari of BJP is just HSC pass.

Congress candidate from Limbayat Dr Ravindra Paatil is a practicing homoeopath doctor, his wife is also a doctor along with their two doctor sons. His opponent BJP's sitting MLA Sangita Paatil has not completed graduation. She has studied till second year of BA.
