Mobile, car accessories smuggling racket busted

AHMEDABAD: In a unique operation, Ahmedabad zonal unit of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has busted a smuggling racket in imported cars and mobile accessories worth Rs 2 crore from Chennai air cargo. The DRI passed the information to the Special Investigation and Intelligence Branch (SIIB) of the Customs at Chennai air cargo which seized the smuggled goods imported by a Tuticorin-based firm from Hong Kong.

Officials said that Ahmedabad Zonal unit of DRI had put together specific intelligence input that an importing firm named Seven Star Trading of Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu will be attempting to smuggle a substantial quantity of branded mobile and car accessories.


"The input said that the company would be smuggling these from Hong Kong by resorting to false declaration and concealment at Chennai air cargo complex," an official said.

Officials said that the DRI had also gathered the input that the modus operandi for smuggling would be concealing cartons of branded mobile and car accessories among cartons of declared unbranded mobile and car accessories.

"The input said that the car and mobile accessories that were to be smuggled are car stands, screen protectors, wire ear phones, wireless chargers, mobile back covers, LCD touchscreens and multi-car chargers of various brands like Baseus, Nillkin, iPaky and Remax ," an official said.

The DRI was alert for the arrival of the consignment at Chennai air cargo.
