Local BJP leaders bank on Modi to pacify Patidars

Surat: City BJP leaders expect Prime Minister Narendra Modi's public meeting in the city to galvanize voters, especially disaffected Patidars, and put the ruling party into a winning mode ahead of the first phase of assembly elections in south Gujarat on December 9.

Modi is scheduled to address a public meeting in Kadodara on November 27 and many party leaders believe his charisma will help win back Patidar voters, especially from Varachha, Karanj, Kamrej and Katargam assembly constituencies to BJP.

Party candidates are placed comfortably in constituencies except those dominated by Patidars in the city. BJP president Amit Shah had to face Patidars' ire at a public felicitation event in Abrama near Mota Varachha in 2016 soon after Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti agitation for reservation. Party leaders have not been able to conduct any programmes in Patidar-dominated areas since then. Modi's first public meeting in Patidar-dominated area is expected to make up for the fiasco at Shah's convention. The meeting venue of the PM has been shifted from Kamrej college ground to Kadodara to accommodate more people. A large number of voters from Bardoli assembly constituency will also be able to attend it. Top BJP leaders have been asked to gather a crowd of over 1 lakh people at the public meeting of the PM. Help of a few diamond barons, too, have been sought in this regard.

"We expect Modi's charisma to work on Patidars. PAAS leader Hardik Patel's popularity is on the decline because of the recent scandals. Patidar youths are disappointed with Hardik's open support to Congress," BJP MLA from Varachha Kumar Kanani said.

BJP MP from Navsari C R Paatil told TOI, "Agitations and elections are two different things. Many Patidar youths have rejoined our party and will be attending the PM's public meeting at Kadodara."
