Surat: Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) plans to work with the city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands on issues relating to Tapi river water management. The partnership would allow them to work in the area of water pollution, Tapi river cleaning and increasing the potential of water sources of Surat city.
Rotterdam and Surat have signed a sister city memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and both are a part of 100 resilient city programme. Rotterdam like Surat is situated in delta region. A major portion of the Netherlands is below sea level.
Deputy municipal commissioner M Nagrajan said, "We would want to have medium term planning for water management. We are looking at new methods to check river pollution and management of river upstream."
SMC feels partnership with Rotterdam would help the city because of new technologies and strategies relating to water management with it. Rotterdam has received grant from the European Union (EU) to enter into partnership with other cities like Surat to help them.
City engineer, SMC, Bharat Dalal told TOI, "Our team visited Gandhinagar along with vice-mayor of Rotterdam and other officials. We made a presentation and have got an assurance from the visitors about technical assistance on building a sustainable water supply system."
Arnold Molenaar, chief resilience officer, city development department of Rotterdam, was in Surat on November 21. He was accompanied by a team of 100 members. He told TOI, "Our city faced the same issues that Surat is facing now in 1990. We worked in a scientific way and got into a better situation in 15 years' time. We have the expertise now to help Surat."
