Top businessman, aides booked for extortion bid

SURAT: Police booked a prominent businessman and his three associates for allegedly attempting to extort money from a property developer, who even tried to commit suicide.

Ashok Kejriwal, the businessman living on Ghod Dod Road and his three associates - Naresh Rabari, Shreeram Vijay Vargiya and Bharat Rabari - were booked following acomplaint lodged by Udhna resident Ajay Vashi with Pandesara police station.


Vashi, who also deals in land, had borrowed Rs six crore from them to invest in his construction project which later jumped out of budge. He claimed to have repaid majority of the amount. However, Kejriwal and others continued pressurising him to recover more money. On September 12, Vashi had attempted suicide by consuming 15 sleeping pills in his office as he was fed up of constant intimidation.

"Vashi said that they were harassing and issuing threats since one year. We are yet to make any arrests and further action will be taken after registering the statements of the accused," said police.

The accused were booked under Indian Penal Code sections 384 (extortion) and others besides Gujarat Money-Lenders Act, 2011.

Police are yet to confirm is he is involved in extortion, however, the offence has been registered against him based on the preliminary investigation.
