Parents stage dharna in private school over fees

Surat: A group of parents staged a dharna outside S D Jain School in Vesu area of the city from morning till late evening on Tuesday for withdrawal of a circular on fees issued by the school authorities.

Police bandobast was made at the school since a number of candidates from different political parties were arriving to support the agitating parents, who have been protesting for the past eight months against high fees being charged by the school.

The parents began to gather outside the school since morning because November 28 was the last date to deposit school fees as per the circular. "We came here to ensure that the school staffers don't harass our children since it was the last day for depositing the fees. The school has been demanding higher fees than the amount fixed by the state government. Our protest is against this," a parent said.

"We are protesting against the fees of Rs1.25 lakh being charged per year than the state government's limit of Rs 15,000 for primary and Rs 25,000 for secondary," another parent said.

"The government, which introduced Goods and Service Tax and demonetisation had made changes when people protested. Why the government is not taking any action on the issue of school fees," an angry parent said.

"The matter of fees is in high court now. We have not increased fees this year. Fees of many students are pending since July. We are just trying to collect the pending fees. We are demanding fees within the lawful limits," school administrator Surendra Manot Jain said.

The school in its latest circular claimed that it was collecting fees as per the directives of district education officer (DEO). However, the DEO claimed that he had not issued any directives. "I have no powers to issue such directives. My office has not issued any directives on fees. I will have to check if the DEO's name is being used by someone," DEO, Surat, U N Rathod said.
