SURAT: A 35-year-old unidentified man, who had allegedly hanged himself in the toilet of a police station, died during treatment in Surat Municipal Institute of Medical Education and Research (SMIMER) here on Sunday.
Police were informed over phone that some people were thrashing a man near a restaurant on Saturday night. The seriously injured man was brought to the police station. The man could not give details about himself and police found him to be of unsound mind. The man asked cops in the police station permission to go the toilet and was taken. When he did not come out for long, policemen checked and found him hanging in the toilet with a piece of cloth tied around his waist.
Cops rushed him to the SMIMER where he was declared dead during treatment. Police suspect either he died due to injuries suffered during the thrashing or suffocation caused by the hanging.
Meanwhile, preliminary postmortem report has not given clear indication about the cause of the man's death. "We have raised a few queries relating to the postmortem, and after clarifications we can reach conclusion whether the man had died due to hanging or thrashing," said R P Barot, deputy commissioner of police, zone I.
Police are collecting CCTV footages from the spot where the man was thrashed to identify the persons who had attacked him. The deceased has not yet been identified. Police are checking with other police stations if a missing-person report has been registered anywhere in the city.
Police had shifted him to the SMIMER, after the man hanged himself in the bathroom of Kapodara police station, and registered a case of accidental death.
