Surat: Two persons died, while two others were rescued from under the debris of a portion of a low income group (LIG) building, which collapsed in Gunjan area of the industrial town of Vapi in Valsad district on Wednesday evening.
Police and fire brigade teams undertook rescue operation at the site of the collapsed three-storey structure that had 12 flats to bring out a couple trapped under the debris for over two hours. The deceased couple was identified as Daxaben Prajapati and her husband Praful Prajapati. The two rescued persons were rushed to Haria Hospital, the police said.
Residents have been raising the issue about the dilapidated structure since months, but the authorities remained unmoved, sources said. However, Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) officials said the residents had been issued notice asking them to vacate the building built 30 years ago.
