Surat: Congress, which remained in oblivion in the state for over 20 years, is riding high on the Patidar factor. The party is hopeful of grabbing power in the state because the community's support had helped it to make BJP bite dust in Patidar-dominated areas of the city in the civic elections held in 2015.
Congress, which managed to win just 14 out of 114 seats in Surat Municipal Corporation elections held in 2010, more than doubled its tally to 36 seats in 2015 and also increased its vote share by 21.45%. In 2010, Congress' vote share was 27.7% as against 49.15% in 2015 municipal elections. This was mainly possible due to 21 seats presented to it on a platter by Patidars who were angry with BJP and agitating for reservation in jobs and seats in educational institutes.
The Patidar factor may not have worked in favour of Congress in other urban areas of Gujarat during the civic elections, but in the Diamond City it painted an alarming picture for the ruling BJP. The BJP, which displayed its best performance in the walled city, Adajan and other migrant dominated and posh areas, secured 51.76% votes, 3.59% less than 55.35% votes in 2010.
In 2010, total votes polled for BJP were 14,08,068 with the vote share of 55.35%, while Congress polled 6,93,743 votes. However, the picture got reversed in 2015 municipal elections. In 2015 election results, BJP polled 18,89,891 votes, whereas Congress polled 14,24,521 votes.
