Surat: A 19-year-old Surat girl has brought laurels to the city by bagging two gold medals at the World Raw Powerlifting (WRP) championship held in Moscow, Russia.
Roma Biren Shah, an engineering student from the Sarvajanik College of Engineering and Technology (SCET), was selected from India to compete at the WRP organized by the World Raw Powerlifting Federation (WRPF) from October 24.
Roma, who has won eight gold medals in powerlifting championships at the district, state and national levels, competed with more than 2,200 participants from 32 countries around the world in the junior raw and open category respectively.
Talking to TOI on phone from Russia, Roma said, "It is a proud moment for my family, my city and my country. I am the first female ever to win this title from India, that too at such a small age. I have been trained by Yazad Bhesania in the city, who is a specialist in training athletes competing for such events."
