A strong lobbying has started by the sitting BJP MLAs after the first list of candidates was issued by party leadership on Friday and it did not have their names. The MLAs, specially from Patidar-dominated areas, are worried whether the party will repeat them or not.
Selection of candidates on some of the seats including that of Surat (north), Surat (east), Katargam, Karanj, Choriyasi and Kamrej is a tricky affair for the ruling BJP. On Katargam seat, which belongs to sitting MLA and minister of state for water resource Nanu Vanani, the BJP leadership is in two minds whether to renominate him or give ticket to someone from Other Backward Class (OBC)-Bakshi Panch community.
Party insiders said Nanu Vanani was camping in Gandhinagar for the whole day on Thursday and had been lobbying with BJP president Amit Shah and chief minister Vijay Rupani for ensuring that his name was included in the first list itself.
On the other hand, Surat (north) seat belongs to chief whip of the party in legislative assembly Ajaykumar Choksi. Even Choksi's name did not figure in the first list, Braising questions whether the party leadership was thinking someone else.
Due to Patidar factor, the BJP is waiting for Congress to announce the names of its candidates in Patidar-dominated seats in the Diamond City. In the last assembly elections in 2012, all the Patidar-dominated seats were won by BJP candidates. However, things are different in the upcoming polls as BJP leaders are facing the ire of Patidar community over quota reservation.
A sitting MLA said, "Mine is a safe seat. Despite this, the party leadership had announced lists containing only six seats. I am in constant touch with the party leadership and am positive about my renomination."
Meanwhile, BJP issued its second list wherein it gave ticket to a new candidate on Surat (east). Arvind Rana has replaced sitting MLA Ranjit Gilitwala. Rana is a senior BJP leader and former standing committee chairman. Gilitwala was not considered by the party due to old age.
