SURAT: Wrapping up his three-day Navsarjan Yatra of South Gujarat, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi sought to reach out to Surtis' hearts by extolling the virtues of the `Diamond City' at a public meeting in Saurashtra Patidardominated Varachha area.While launching a broadside against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for gloating over the World Bank report on ease of doing business, Gandhi said, "We don't need a certificate from the WB but from the small and medium businessmen of Surat," Gandhi said in the diamond polishing hub.
The Congress VP announced that he would be visiting Surat again on November 8 to interact with the city's traders and businessmen, who have the potential to bring about a change in the manufacturing sector. "If India want's to compete with China, Surat will have to play an important role," he said, adding, "When Congress comes to power at the Centre, it will restructure the GST. Surat's two mainstays -diamond and textile have been one of the worst hit by the note ban and GST with textile traders coming out in open against the BJP government.
