GST effect: Family wedding costlier by 15%

Surat: A father wanted to get his only daughter wedded in a five star hotel. So, a few months ago when he approached a five star hotel management, they gave him a package of Rs 22 lakh for two-day function for 1,100 guests. However, the hotel — which recently obtained its new Goods and Service Tax number — has now said that over and above the quoted price, there will be either 18 or 28 per cent of GST chargeable. The marriage is to be solemnised in the last week of November and the father is in a quandary whether to continue with the booking or cancel it.

"I do textile trading business and have three forms for which I have applied for GST numbers, but have not obtained it. In the past we never faced such issues. The bills were all inclusive and we got bills for the amount we wanted. May be now I will have to cut down on my guest list so that the budget doesn't exceed."

The scenario is not the same any more. If the booking is for food and beverages and rooms with rent of less than Rs 7,500 per day, there will be 18 per cent GST and for rooms with rent more than Rs 7,500 per day, it would be 28 per cent GST.

"Starting from items like sound, lighting, stage, decoration, flower arrangement, mandap, catering, set up and even party places are all under 18 per cent category and now everyone is made to pay. As a result, costing has gone up by at least 10-15 per cent," an event organizer Danny Nirbang said.

Even the rent for Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) party plots have gone up and with additional 18 per cent GST.
