No flowers for this Surat BJP candidate

Surat: Harsh Sanghvi, who has been renominated as a BJP candidate from Majura assembly constituency in the city, has decided to give the issue of environment prominence during his election campaign. He will not accept flowers and garlands from his supporters and ask them to plant saplings from the money thus saved and ensure that at least 5,000 saplings are planted before polling on December 9 in the constituency.

"We want to increase tree cover in the area. This will also help improve the quality of air here," A BJP worker said.

"It is high time we gave importance to environmental issues. Otherwise, soon living in the cities will become a hell for people," said Sanghvi, who was the youngest BJP MLA to be elected in the state in the 2012 assembly elections. His victory margin of 71,556 votes was the highest in the state then.

Sanghvi will take out a cycle yatra, a motorcycle rally and a padyatra in Majura before and after filing of the nomination papers. The party also plans to hold a plantation drive which will see Sanghvi and his supporters planting tree saplings along roads, dividers, open plots and gardens in the constituency.

Majura constituency has around 2.30 lakh voters and approximately 40,000 of them are textile traders.
