SURAT: Sitting BJP MLA Kumar Kanani kicked off a show of strength on Monday afternoon here when he went to file his nomination papers from Varachha Road seat. Tens of thousands of supporters joined Kanani in his rally, which was more like a victory procession.
Few days ago Kanani had issued threats to Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) leaders in a subtle way after his office in Varachha was ransacked by some miscreants. Kanani had warned the miscreants if his election office was targeted again.
In the rally, large number of Patidar voters from his constituency were seen actively participating and shouting slogans in favour of BJP. There were personnel from Rapid Action Force (RAF) and city police all along the route of the procession.
Known as a firebrand leader in the party, Kanani had led many protests even against the BJP-ruled Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC). He had also organized dharna programmes and protest rallies against his own party leaders for ignoring the demands of people in his constituency.
Kanani told TOI, "I worked for my people for five years and they wanted to join me when I went to file my nomination papers. The deployment of police was due to the presence of a central minister which was as per the protocol. We had never asked for any police security and don't fear PAAS or Congress workers. Our job is to ensure party's victory with a big margin and that we will do."
