SURAT: When the candidates for the remaining six assembly seats in the Diamond City were announced by BJP on Monday, there was resentment in some sections. Many senior party leaders remained silent but a few like Bhimji Patel, a former standing committee chairman, spoke out against the party.
BJP candidate from Surat (East) Arvind Rana too is facing opposition from several communities, including those who are members of Mota Mandir Yuvak Mandal. They have pasted posters in Chauta Bazaar asking Rana not to enter their area for campaigning.
Not a single textile trader from other states or a local leader from North Indian community figures in the BJP's list of 12 candidates for the city. This has irked Uttar Bharatiya Samaj, Rajasthani Samaj, Bihari Samaj and members of Odisha community.
Ajay Choudhary has resigned from BJP. He will file his candidature from Choriyasi assembly seat as an independent. The constituencies of Udhana and Choriyasi have sizeable population of North Indians. Choriyasi has 66,500 voters who belong to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, 23,000 from Rajasthan and another 45,000 from Haryana, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and other states. The number of migrant voters out of the total 4.14 lakh electors here is 1.60 lakh. Of the 2.53 lakh Gujarati voters in this seat, 79,000 are Koli Patels, 23,000 Patidars, 23,500 OBCs and 25,600 fishermen. There are 31,500 minority voters too in Choriyasi assembly seat.
There are 2.15 lakh voters in Udhana constituency and most of them are textile workers. Majority of them are textile workers from other states and hold around 55,000 votes. The constituency also has around 60,000 Mehsana Patel and Koli Patel voters. However, this time around, both the parties have fielded candidates who are Patels. Leaders of migrant communities are holding group meetings to discuss how to send a message to BJP to show the party leaders that they are unhappy over being ignored in Udhana and Choriyasi constituencies in the city.
Patel had sought ticket from Karanj assembly constituency. However, Pravin Goghari, a municipal councillor, was given the ticket by BJP.
Patel alleged, "In 2015, Pravin Goghari was given ticket for municipal elections after he paid money. Now, he has paid Rs10 crore to get the ticket for assembly elections. The BJP workers of the area know me and they would all work for me. I will file my candidature as an independent on Tuesday. I will not resign from the party. Let the party take action against me."
