The driver on noticing some sparks and noise applied the brakes and informed Surat railway station officials once the train stopped. It is suspected that the iron bench was placed on the tracks by criminals involved in ganja and liquor smuggling through trains.
Government Railway Police and Railway Protection Force officials found that the iron bench had been placed on the tracks between Surat and Utran railway station. A complaint was lodged at Surat railway station police station about the incident which was later transferred to city police. A complaint was registered at Katargam police station and its personnel with soon start investigation. Senior railway officials met city police officials and discussed the issue.
"The case has been transferred to city police and will be thoroughly investigated. It is yet to be found out if this was the handiwork of the criminals. We are investigating from all angles," city police commissioner Satish Sharma said.
In the past, an unidentified person had placed a huge piece of wood on the railway tracks near Udhna. This time an iron bench was placed on the tracks close to Utkal Nagar, which is known as a ganja hub. Some people living in the slums of migrant labourers from Odisha, store and supply ganja to different parts of the city. Police teams were attacked recently when they had raided the slums on being tipped off about ganja consignment.
