Inquiry ordered against Surat ASI for brandishing pistol at petrol pump

Surat: A video of an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) brandishing his pistol and thrashing a petrol pump attendant went viral on social media on Saturday after which police officials came under pressure to take action against him. Police are yet to take any action against the ASI, who can be seen in the video thrashing and brandishing his pistol at the victim. The cop also took help of a private person who can be seen pushing the victim in the video.
Victim Pankaj Singh submitted an application to police commissionerate on Saturday alleging that a person in civil dress had attacked him and then threatened with a pistol on Friday afternoon at the petrol pump where he is employed. Singh identified the person as Nanu Bhana, an ASI posted at Chowk Bazaar police station in the city.
Since the entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras of the petrol pump, accused Bhana and his colleague officers tried to pressurize Singh to not register a police complaint. The cop arrived at the petrol pump with a woman on a scooter. He got down and asked the attendant to fill petrol in his vehicle. The attendant asked him to move his scooter a little further to accommodate other customers, which angered the ASI.
The cop asked him to start filling petrol in his vehicle, but Singh refused. The cop caught Singh by the collar, slapped, punched and kicked him several times. The cop then took out his pistol to threaten him at the petrol pump and can be seen in the video calling someone from his mobile phone.
"The inquiry in the matter has been handed over to deputy commissioner of police. We will take action on the basis of the report," joint commissioner of police, sector I, Harekrishna Patel said.
In the past whenever incidents of ASIs' brandishing their service pistols were reported, city police commissioner Satish Sharma instructed them to return their pistols to the headquarters. A couple of ASIs had issued threats to people brandishing their service pistols in the past. They were allowed to keep the pistols only if situation demanded.
