‘Make In Surat’ campaign to help boost city’s economy

Surat: Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) wants the city's economy, mainly dependent on textile and diamond sectors, to branch out to other fields for which it would create a platform for outside and local entrepreneurs to manufacture 'Make in Surat' and 'Made in Surat' products under its Smart City programme in 2018-19.
SMC officials want the local economy to diversify into software technology, knowledge sharing, service sector etc. An innovation incubation centre (IIC) having an iconic building and a logistics park projects have already reached implementation phase. SMC spent about Rs 350 crore under its Smart City programme in 2017-18, which could touch Rs 500 crore in 2018-19.
Special commissioner in-charge of Smart City programme M Nagrajan told TOI, "Our emphasis is to build a long-term resilience centre for Surat so that it is able to withstand any global economic upheavals. We have plans to establish Brand Surat. 'Make in Surat' initiative for outside entrepreneurs and 'Made in Surat' for local traders would help the city acquire a global identity. Such initiatives would help the city attain global standards."
SMC's emphasis in 2018-19 would be on building roads, improving mass transport, installing drainage pipeline, constructing 'rainbaseras', open air gymnasiums and parks. The focus would be on building social infrastructure for common man.
