"We conducted checking at the residences and locations frequented by history-sheeters. Movement of persons with criminal history is being checked. We searched suspected locations for weapons but have found nothing as yet," a police officer said.
Police had carried out a search in the area on Monday after some hooligans targeted a bus and a car on Sunday in a fight between two gangs. The hooligans had fought with each other openly on a public road which created panic at Bhathena.
A group of around 200 residents, including women, reached the police commissionerate on Tuesday in a rally holding placards that demanded action against anti-social elements running liquor and gambling dens in the area.
"There is rise in criminal activity in the area in past six months but police are not taking any action. Anti-social elements are not only involved in criminal activities but also trying to create communal tension by harassing Hindu families living in Muslim locality," said Aslam Cyclewala, a municipal councillor of Congress.
The residents alleged that these gangs operate gambling dens around the canal and pick pockets of people travelling in BRTS buses. "The criminals have made life difficult for women in the area," Cyclewala added.
