Leaders of jewellery sector stated that Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the main body that is responsible for licensing hallmarking centres in the country, has proposed new hallmarking standards with UID. Each jewellery article, be it ring, necklace or any other jewellery, will be inscribed with a UID.
The UID on jewellery articles, as per the proposal of the BIS, will help in curbing duplication and frauds. The UID rule is likely to come into force with the new hallmarking norms to be set by the BIS.
In a joint meeting of All India Gems and Jewellery Trade Federation (GJF) and other jewellery associations, the jewellers were of the opinion that the UID in present circumstances was not possible to implement and that it will create disruption and disarray in the industry.
GJF member Nainesh Patchigar said, "It is not possible for the jewellers to have each and every pieces of jewellery hallmarked with UIDs. Jewellers are not doing hallmarking themselves, it is the centres authorized by BIS which is performing the hallmarking. If the hallmarked jewellery is found to be faulty, then the jeweller is not to be held responsible."
Patchigar added, "The GJF and other jewellery associations in India will be jointly representing the issues on hallmarking with the BIS, before any proposals are finalized by it. If the proposals are finalized, then the jewellers will oppose the new rule pan-India."
