Cong candidate starts signature campaign to demands recounting of votes

Surat: Congress candidate from Kamrej assembly constituency has started a signature campaign to garner support from voters for filing a petition in Gujarat high court to demand recounting of votes through VVPAT slips.
Ashok Jirawala, who was defeated by BJP's V D Jhalavadiya with a margin of 28,191 votes, has been demanding that Election Commission of India (ECI) order recounting of votes by comparing VVPAT slips.

When the election results were announced on December 18, Jirawala had taken out a protest rally from Yogi Chowk in Varachha to the district collector's office in Athwalines. Jirawala sat on a dharna outside the district collector's office with his 400 supporters and alleged malpractice in EVM machines to ensure that BJP candidate emerged victorious.

During the last assembly elections in 2012, Congress candidate from Kamrej assembly constituency Bhagirath Pithavdiwala was defeated by BJP's Praful Pansheriya by a margin of 61,371 votes. Pansheriya had got 1,26,032 votes, whereas Bhagirath polled 64,661 votes.
"There is a residential society in my constituency where all the voters cast their votes in my favour. When I lost, we cross-checked with the voters and they informed that the entire society had voted for me. When I inquired with the booth managers, it was shocking to know that all the votes had gone to BJP," Jirawala said.
Jirawala added, "The entire situation has been reserved by BJP through EVMs. My votes were transferred to BJP candidate. I was winning with a handsome margin, but the results showed it the other way."
About his next course of action, Jirawala added, "I met Congress president Rahul Gandhi in Ahmedabad and discussed the issue with him. He has assured me all legal help in exposing BJP in Gujarat. I am taking signatures of my voters and will file a petition demanding recounting of votes through VVPAT slips."
